Discover atmospheric Stavenisse

Anyone walking or cycling through Stavenisse will marvel at the beautiful facades from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Take the time to discover this beautiful front street village. Walk from the harbor to the reformed church through the Voorstraat where the rich past of Stavenisse is visible behind the lime trees.

But, first admire the Stavenisse Molen at the harbor, the flour mill that has been in Stavenisse since 1801 and the former town hall at the head of the harbour. This is where the inhabitants found a safe haven during the flood disaster of 1953. Nevertheless, Stavenisse was badly hit and 153 people drowned. Stavenisse thus suffered the most deaths of all of Tholen.

'The Sea Monster' on the road to Sints-Maartensdijk is the monument that reminds us of this. Just like the two beautiful nature reserves in the vicinity of Stavenisse: the Geulse Weel and the Diepe Gat. In reality remnants of this and previous dike breaches.
After the disaster, the port of Stavenisse was described as a 'weak link' and threatened with closure. Thanks to fierce resistance, other solutions were sought and Stavenisse is now the safe haven for many water sports enthusiasts and anglers.

Our walk through the beautiful Voorstraat ends at the Reformed Church. A relatively young building, but when you consider that it replaced the 1910 church in 1617 because it was too small…
