Filmmaker/visual artist Mills based his second feature film on his own experiences: shortly after the death of his mother, his 75-year-old father revealed that he was homosexual.
For a while, Dad Mills enjoyed the gay lifestyle to the fullest, until he also died of cancer a few years later. Plummer plays the father with great verve, McGregor is subdued as the grieving son and Laurent is charming as his sweetheart. The story moves along with little urgency, but this is offset by endearing characters, surprising humor and an inventive style.
An Oscar for Plummer.
