Discover the South coast of Tholen from Scherpenisse

Scherpenisse is the smallest village but has the highest beacon on the island of Tholen. The fifty-metre-high water tower stands proudly above the other buildings and can be seen from afar. It is a stone's throw from the Oosterschelde National Park and the De Pluimpot nature reserve. The polders of Scherpenisse are among the oldest on the island. The small village also has a great history, which you can see when you walk over the Hoge Markt. With a gift from Maria van Nasseau, the eldest daughter of Willem de Zwijger, the former town hall was built here in the 16th century. Another building from that time on the Hoge Markt served as a stopover for the stagecoach that transported mail from Walcheren to Holland. A beautiful building where you can now spend the night and enjoy a delicious meal in Hotel Restaurant De Gouden Leeuw. Also striking is the church of Scherpenisse. This is not in the middle of the village, as is the case in many old villages. Built in the late Brabant Gothic style, this 15th-century Reformed church was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Another attraction of a completely different order is the Vliedberg (mound) on the Westkerkseweg just outside the village. This mound is reminiscent of the battle against the water. From Scherpenisse you can also take the ferry to Gorishoek-Wemeldinge-Yerseke.
