Tourist information boards on Tholen

On Wednesday 18 July 2018, the first tourist information board was unveiled. This board provides information about the V1 that came down in Poortvliet on March 3, 1945. This resulted in four fatalities. Alderman Hommel presented the sign in Poortvliet, in the presence of relatives of the victims.

Several times the municipality has received a request to pay attention to the four victims who fell in 1945 by means of a monument or something similar. Now it has come to the point that information is given by means of a board about this special sad event during the second world war.

Cycling and walking in Zeeland

Poortvliet is one of the 22 locations in the municipality of Tholen where these information boards have been placed. In this way, the municipality of Tholen wants to raise awareness of unique or special places and inform visitors and residents about the cultural history of Tholen. Did you know that many tourists like to walking in Zeeland and want information about the location? The signs have been placed along the most popular cycling and walking routes in Zeeland on Tholen, so that visitors can learn more about these environments while cycling or walking. The signs provide information about, among other things, the vliedberg in Westkerke, the harbor of Tholen and into the bunkers Stavenisse. In this way invisible spots are made visible and we tell the history and authentic stories of Tholen.

Collaboration with Tholen Better Known Foundation

The project stems from the Tholen Tourist Development Plan and was picked up in collaboration with the Tholen Better Known Foundation. A working group, consisting of organizations such as Heemkundekring Tholen and Stichting Tholen Sterk, worked on the creation of the signs. The signs are designed in the new house style of the Tholen Better Known Foundation and bear the logo and slogan “Tholen, so close is Zeeland”. The signs also contain QR codes that refer to the English translation of the texts on the website www.eilandtholen.nl.
