The latter was also a dike warden and the 1st mayor of the village (1813-1832). By renaming the newest street of Tholen to Gaaswijck, this name will be forever linked to the core of Poortvliet.

Get to know Poortvliet
The core of Poortvliet is located on the island of Tholen in the province of Zeeland. The village is best known in Zeeland for the largest residential boulevard in the Benelux. Poortvliet is first mentioned in the history books in 1203. It originated around a burglary channel of the Pluimpot. Tholen used to be a series of separate islands with large and small channels in between. De Pluimpot was one of the largest gullies. The Pluimpot was closed in 1957, today it is a nature reserve with many birds.
