Oosterschelde tidal basins

Discover the underwater world without diving!

To make the underwater life in the Oosterschelde more accessible, Natuurvereniging Tholen has placed three concrete tidal basins at Scherpenisse. When the concrete tanks are filled with water during high tide, the water remains at low tide, making it possible to observe fish, seaweed and shells. The project aims to make the underwater life in the Oosterschelde accessible. It's a great way to introduce children to the region's biodiversity. The initiative focuses on education and awareness raising and is an interesting attraction for students, tourists and local residents.

The concrete tidal barges have been placed close to Brasserie De Zeester in Scherpenisse, the Scheldestromen water board has designated the location for the barges. As Natuurvereniging Tholen we have various working groups, for example for birds, seaweeds, plants and landscape management. A number of volunteers from these working groups are also involved in nature and environmental education. We provide outdoor lessons for school classes and would like to make marine life accessible to everyone. With the concrete tidal basins we can provide nature education all year round, for both students and recreationists. We are no longer dependent on the tide and that makes this educational attraction unique.”

Children see many types of shellfish living in the tanks and they can sometimes find an egg capsule of rays, among other things. They can also get acquainted with food for larger fish and discover how the animals move under water. All this without getting wet or having to dive. It is a wonderful way to involve children and adults in nature. The concrete tidal basins are a gift to the Thool community on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the nature association this year. It is an accessible way of nature education that is accessible to everyone. It is an initiative that contributes to raising awareness and education about the region's biodiversity.
