Fur felting

Fur felting at Thool farm 't Ceciliahof

Get to know an ancient craft on an ancient Thool farm; the fur felting. In a whole or half day you can turn the shaved coat of one of our Drentse Heideschapen into a showpiece. Nice and relaxed working with wool, water and soap in the middle of the Thool countryside, isn't it wonderful?

What is fur felting?

With fur felting, a 'vegetarian fur' is made by felting a shaved fur on a woolen base. It looks like a sheep skin, but it actually comes from a sheep that is still walking around freely!

  • Fur felting is whole environmentally friendly. Fur felting does not involve any nasty chemicals at all, just soap and water!
  • It's a very Friendly fur: the sheepskin that we make has no skin or skin on the back, but a soft wool layer of felt. The shorn sheep is still grazing somewhere!

The farm and the sheep

Our farmhouse 't Ceciliahof, built in 1738, is hidden between Sint-Maartensdijk and Stavenisse. Our Drentse Heideschapen graze on the inner dikes thereof. They play the leading role in our hobby that got out of hand

The coats of these animals are truly beautiful and the wool is of course a wonderful sustainable product. Every year our animals are shaved in a traditional way. From the beautiful furs that come off, we make beautiful felt furs and other workpieces by processing them with water, soap and friction. You can experience for yourself what the old craft of fur felting really means in one of our workshops.

The workshops are given in our yard where the only things you hear are the birds and the sheep.
