Detour Tholen

Fortified city, rich in culture and water

These hiking trails take you to "unknown" places via fun elements and you get acquainted with the landscape and the rich culture (history) of the Thool countryside. These short themed walks (detours) are signposted in Tholen by green signs with yellow direction arrows with an icon of the fortress.

About this walk Tholen
After the Fiftienhundredgemetenpolder was dyked, the town of Tholen arose in the 13th century on the sea dyke along the Eendracht. Its origin and name are related to the levying of tolls by the dukes of Brabant. Tholen receives city rights in 1366, around that year the town was reinforced with walls, gates and fortresses at the initiative of Jan van Blois, Lord of Tholen. During the Eighty Years' War this was replaced by an entirely new star-shaped defense system with ramparts, bulwarks and fortresses.

This walking route takes you over a remaining part of these ramparts, past monuments and other places of interest.
