Tholen: Hospitable fortress on the water
When you walk around Tholen, one thing stands out: the authentic appearance. The fortified city combines its historical past with new impetus in an excellent way. The historic street plan has not changed for centuries and there are no fewer than 60 national monuments. Various historic buildings have been given a stylish new destination, such as hotels Tholen/restaurant JuNa at the port. The tram that used to be an important connection with Bergen op Zoom and Antwerp is returning in the new pavement of the Eendrachtsweg, in which the drainage gutters are shaped in such a way that it looks like the tram track is still there. There is a rich club life and a lot is organized for the children. The small scale compared to large cities is very attractive to many people. Where people used to leave, they now often remain. I even see many former classmates coming back to Tholen.” And that is understandable.
Tholen is a gem and waiting to be discovered by you. If you look at Tholen from above, you can still recognize the star-shaped contours of the old fortress very well. The town is part of the first waterline in the Netherlands and has traditionally been inextricably linked to water. There used to be a real fishing port. The fishing past is still very noticeable in Tholen. There are still many fishing companies and fishing trucks that sell their fish every day “over the bridge” for miles around. The current marina adjacent to the city is accessible for ships up to 15 meters. Larger ships can call at Tholen via the Scheldt-Rhine Canal, which is also the border between the provinces of Zeeland and North Brabant. RICH HISTORY WITH A CONNECTION TO THE WATER
Tholen was founded in the 13th century on the water of the Eendracht. A toll was levied here, which is why the place owes its name. After the Dalempolder was embanked in 1364, the city on the north side was expanded with the new city and Tholen received city rights in 1366. By the middle of the 15th century, when Tholen's borders had been reached by land reclamation, the town was at its peak. Shortly afterwards, disaster struck the city. In 1452 most of the houses burned and the guest house, town hall and the gates were also destroyed by the fire. The fortifications have served their purpose for many centuries. After the departure of the French, the fortress was lifted in 1814 and the gates and walls disappeared. What remains is now a leafy walking area. Tholen's relative isolation came to an end in 1928, when the bridge over the Eendracht was opened to traffic. This bridge was destroyed twice during the Second World War. Tholen has grown considerably in the last 20 years, which is clearly visible in the new housing estates that border the star-shaped heart of the historic center. The city now has more than 8.000 inhabitants. Tholen is located on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal and is easy to reach from North Brabant by taking the N4 from the A286, which runs over the Thoolse bridge.
The cityscape is dominated by the Big church, a cruciform basilica in the Brabant Gothic style that is definitely worth a visit. The star-shaped fortress that surrounds the city is now a shady walking route, perfect for exploring the green ramparts of the city. Tholen is located on the border of North Brabant and Zeeland, right next to the A4, which is an important access road to the rest of Zeeland. The Kunstkring Tholen annually organizes the Art route. Visual artists exhibit and performing and music artists perform on a 1500-step walking route. Roparun team Tholen
The Roparun is a non-stop relay race that has been held since 1992 between Rotterdam and Paris.
