Nature Reserve De Pluimpot

The Pluimpot is a small nature reserve with a rich history. The Pluimpot is the last trace of the channel that cut the island of Tholen in two until 1556. Due to the Delta Works, it is now a dammed inlet that serves as a high water refuge and breeding area for coastal birds such as oystercatchers, common terns and avocets. The salt plants and orchids also seized their chance to settle on the dikes and on the edge of the riverbank. De Pluimpot is accessible via the paths on the dikes. Birds can be seen all year round. Immediately next to the path, the bank of the waterway is covered with overgrown forest vegetation. A walking route is available that starts at the Markt. (Available at Wegwijs Lokaal or download the route here.

Oosterschelde National Park

Sint-Maartensdijk borders the Oosterschelde National Park, the largest national park in the Netherlands. The park has an open connection with the North Sea via the storm surge barrier. 800 billion liters of salt water flow in and out of the area twice a day. The mud flats and sandbanks that are under water at high tide, dry up again at low tide. Because of this tidal nature, the Oosterschelde is a unique area: a dynamic world of wind, water, mudflats and salt marshes. In addition, the Oosterschelde has a fascinating underwater world with harbor porpoises and seals and the stones of the dikes have been transformed into a colorful tropical-looking reef. Hundreds of species of plants and animals live in the water and in the brackish water nature reserves around it. The Oosterschelde is a home, a nursery and a roadside restaurant at the same time. Old age can also lead to physical mobile limitations, making us more dependent on other possibilities to communicate, for example for a digital outing or to entertain ourselves. The computer, tablet or smartphone can help us with this. It is important that we can handle these resources a bit. We in Maartenshof have been working for years to help the elderly deal with these substances. senior web helps people individually with their questions about working with a laptop, smartphone or tablet.

History

Haestinge
Sint-Maartensdijk used to be called Haestinge. The small village on the Pluimpot was exactly in a place on this sea channel where there were strong ebb and flow currents. Hence this part of the Pluimpot was called Haest-Ee (Haest = fast and Ee = water flow). The hare on the coat of arms of Sint-Maartensdijk undoubtedly originated from a corruption of the old name of the place in which a shift took place from Heast-Ee to Heas tee.

Narrowstad, connected with Oranje

Sint-Maartensdijk is mentioned in Dutch historiography as early as the 13th century. At the end of the 14th century, the Van Borssele family acquired the castle north of Sint-Maartensdijk. This castle was also the home of Lord Frank van Borssele and Countess Jacoba of Bavaria. Alienora van Borssele, Frank's sister, gave the place city rights in 1485, allowing the narrow city to be reinforced with ramparts, fortresses and three gates. Via the first wife of William of Orange, Anna van Egmond – better known as Anna van Buren – Sint-Maartensdijk Castle came into the possession of the Oranges in the 16th century. It was finally demolished in 1818 after a period of decay. Archaeological excavations of the remains were carried out in the 60s. Today only the moat is still visible, on the edge of the village.

Since the sixteenth century, Sint-Maartensdijk has been one of the eight Zeeland narrow towns. These are smaller towns with city rights but without a seat in the States of Zeeland. In Regional Museum De Meeeloos you can find more information about the bond between Sint-Maartensdijk and the Oranjes, a bond that still exists. For example, Queen Beatrix visited Sint-Maartensdijk in 1996 and King Willem-Alexander is currently Lord of Sint-Maartensdijk.

St. Maartensdijk Church

Martin's Church
The Maartenskerk is located behind the market square. The construction of the church started in the fourteenth century and the church is built in Gothic style. In the church there are several funerary monuments, including for members of the Van Borssele and Liens families, both of whom have an important place in the history of Sint-Maartensdijk.

Sint-Maartensdijk Island Tholen

City Hall
The monumental town hall was built in about 1590 and renovated in 1628 according to a gable stone. After a renovation in the 20th century, the municipal council of Tholen resided in the building until 2008. After that it was used as a hotel until 2019. The complex was purchased in 2021 by a Thool entrepreneur who wants to give it a public function again in collaboration with the Municipality of Tholen and the community of Sint-Maartensdijk.

Sint-Maartensdijk once had a harbor on the Pluimpot. This was a side channel of the Oosterschelde. Due to the flood disaster in 1953, the channel at Gorishoek was dammed. As a result, the harbor dried up, creating the current De Pluimpot nature reserve.
