A unique experience from Tholen

Nothing is more fun than seeing seals yourself. This is very well possible in the Oosterschelde at low tide. Then they sunbathe and rest on sandbanks, close to a gully. The favorite places where they rest are on the Roggenplaat and at the head of the Vondelingsplaat.

Several tour boats from small to large sail to the seals all year round. They are clearly visible from the boat without being disturbed.

Which seals do you encounter?

There are two different species of seals in the Oosterschelde. You can see the difference in their heads. The common one is somewhat smaller and has a flat snout. They have a nicer look. The gray has more of a dog-like head with a longer nose. They are also a lot more robust and larger. There are between 125 – 150 seals in the Oosterschelde all year round.

Although seals look sweet, they are not. They are formidable hunters and have very sharp teeth
