Monumental Farms
When you are on Tholen, it is more than worthwhile to visit one of the monumental farms. The Huys Vermuyden on the Kettingdijk and the homestead Nooitgedacht under Sint-Annaland are a few examples of the special farms on offer. Hofstede Reygersburgh on the Provincialeweg from Sint-Maartensdijk to Stavenisse is perhaps the most famous farm, it dates from 1680 and can be recognized by the unique oval windows.
Due to the large differences in appearance and interior, the farms on Tholen are difficult to characterize. What they all have in common is a house with a relatively large barn, a pigsty, a bakery where bread was baked in the past and people stayed in the summer and a wagon shed. The beautiful cycling route with the all-encompassing name “Along valuable heirlooms” a very good picture of the special agricultural and cultural heritage that Tholen has to offer.
